Gene Transfer Technology Improves Dairy Production and Quality

The application of gene transfer technology to dairy cows can inhibit the spread of bacterial infections and help dairy producers increase production. Scientists in the United States have applied this technique to the production of dairy cows to combat the common bacterial infection, mastitis. This infection is a common disease in the dairy industry, affecting the quantity and quality of milk. Edward B. Knipling, manager of the USDA Agricultural Research Service Center, said: “This study is an important step in understanding the role of genes in protecting animals from disease.” Mastitis not only affects the lactation of cows It also continues to affect milk production. Milk produced by cows with mastitis cannot reach pre-illness levels. In order to solve this problem, the ARS research team has used DNA recombination technology to establish genetically modified materials. The DNA recombination technique involves the production of a genetic code for the naturally occurring antimicrobial protein, Glucobacter pylori.
