Hormone replacement therapy can improve the memory of patients with kidney disease

According to a recent article published in the journal PNAS, the cognitive function of patients can be significantly improved by better understanding the timing of hormone replacement therapy. This finding is important for the design of novel hormone replacement therapies.

Cortisol is a key hormone for life-sustaining, regulating a range of physiological activities in the body, including metabolism, immune response, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels. Too low a level of cortisol can cause fatigue, muscle weakness, hypoglycemia, and depression.

Patients with cortisol deficiency will be relieved by hydrocortisone acetate (a medical hormone) replacement therapy after being diagnosed with kidney defects. However, even after receiving treatment, the patient may experience abnormalities in cognition, mood, sleep, and immune response, which in turn affects the quality of life.

For patients with normal hormonal levels, corrugated release of cortisol occurs at different times of the day. In this study, the authors recruited 15 male volunteers between the ages of 20 and 33, and then received replacement therapy that mimicked the release of hormones in the body, without time-specific hormone replacement therapy and control. Afterwards, the authors examined the patient's memory, emotional response, and brain activity characteristics.

The results showed that after receiving different types of treatment, the patients showed significant differences in the response of the cortisol-sensitive areas of the brain after seeing different facial expressions.

Compared with other treatments, oscillating hormone replacement therapy can more accurately simulate the release characteristics of human cortisol, and the patients receiving the above treatments are better than the other two groups.

In this regard, the authors believe that the hormone release characteristics of the human body under physiological conditions for hormone replacement therapy can help improve the brain function of patients.
