Recently, the Human-Computer Interaction Technology Team of the University of Birmingham, led by Professor Bob Stone, developed a set of simulation equipment. They used virtual reality technology to allow military doctors to save people in the cabin of the transport aircraft in wartime conditions.
After wearing the Thunder snake OSVR helmet, the doctor can see the cabin of the transporter with the gun sitting on the warrior. In cooperation with Boeing (UK), the team also simulated the sounds heard in the cabin in various flight states of the CH-47.
CH-47
At present, the British Ministry of Defence will recommend doctors to the Royal Air Force Headquarters base internship, because there is a batch of genuine CH-47.
In order to create a closed cabin feel, Imagine Inflatables supplies the project with an inflatable and detachable cabin. The wounds that feel realistic and the broken prosthetics come from TraumaFX.
Professor Bob Stone in the demonstration project
Stone's team is primarily responsible for the development of wartime scenarios. The professor said, "We are experimenting with what the doctors will encounter in the real world." But they have encountered technical problems.
In the beginning, the team wanted to do research and development with Oculus equipment, but the Unity3D engine was always incompatible. In order to keep the project progress, they temporarily chose the open source virtual reality helmet OSVR led by Razer. But Professor Stone still hopes to experience a better HTC Vive later.
Doctors are hoping to give it a try, but only if the technology is useful enough.
Col Peter Mahoney, an anesthesiologist who works at the Royal Defence Medical Center, believes that "this technology allows us to start thinking about national defense services from a different perspective. Perhaps this more cost-effective training method will make the rescue more sensitive in the future. But we I still hope that it will be put into trials faster to see if it works."
