According to foreign media reports, scientists have developed a handheld mobile device that can monitor HIV virus in real time. The device can display HIV virus results by taking a drop of blood on the finger. Related articles are published in the recent Clinical Chemistry. This technology enables quick and easy diagnosis in remote villages.
There are nearly 34 million HIV-infected people worldwide, while 68% of the infected people live in sub-Saharan Africa, and the second largest gathering area is East Asia and Southeast Asia. Many HIV-infected people in these areas cannot be diagnosed mainly because it is difficult to reach a medical center. This will further aggravate the already heavy financial burden of the country and is expected to reduce GDP by 1.5% per year. As parents die of AIDS, more than 16 million AIDS orphans are generated each year.
Therefore, low-cost mobile HIV testing devices are urgently needed in remote medical conditions. In this study, Dr. Curtis D. Chin and Dr. Yuk Kee Cheung designed an instrument that can perform enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays to detect HIV. The authors say the instrument is capable of performing laboratory-level HIV testing at the fingertips within 15 minutes.
The instrument is capable of detecting extremely weak signals and automatically sharing test results with the rest of the world via a mobile or satellite network. As data is updated in real time, government agencies and epidemiologists can monitor the incidence of AIDS in different regions through the mobile device. Can greatly improve the efficiency of dispensing drugs in different regions.
