New technology for skin cancer screening to achieve rapid detection of skin cancer

Release date: 2016-08-02

The University of Connecticut Health Center in Connecticut recently offers a state-of-the-art advanced smart device that looks for clues to skin cancer and constantly monitors changes in sputum.

The device has a body scan camera and smart software called "helps us find skin cancer in a flash," says Dr. Jane Grant-Kels of the Health Center at the University of Connecticut.

The technology, called FotoFinder Bodystudio Automated Total Body Mapping, allows dermatologists to take more than 20 photos of the patient's body, including the palms and soles, in 10 minutes. And in each of the subsequent photographs, the corresponding parts can be compared, prompting the dermatologist's patients to change or appear new.

"This technology can help us save more skin cancer and melanoma patients," Grant-Kels said. “This technique can detect early lesions and have more precise monitoring of changes in the patient's skin.”

If the skin of the examinee is found to change, another technique included in this device, called In Vivo Reflectance Confocal Microscopy, will employ a non-invasive, optimized imaging technique. The technology provides high definition skin cell imaging. In many cases it can replace a painful skin biopsy.

In addition, dermatologists advise that if there are many people with sputum or family history of skin cancer or melanoma, it is recommended that this group of people go to a professional doctor every six months for a skin test.
