According to a new study published in the journal Science in the journal Science, scientists at Harvard University have used artificial scales to create a soft-robot that can crawl like a snake, which can slide in the water, open the door, and Raise an object that is more than 1000 times its own weight. The researchers designed the software robot using a paper-cut art called kirigami. Kirigami is a variant of origami art that relies on cutting rather than folding.
This crawling robot consists of a continuously expanding, retracted, elastic tube. The plastic scale attached to the surface of the robot gives it a three-dimensional and highly adaptable skin. The artificial scales are made of snake scales, which can make the robot crawl like a snake. The researchers cut a small incision with a laser on a stretchable plastic sheet, simulating the shape of the scale, and placing the plastic sheet outside the elastic tube of the robot. When the elastic tube expands due to inflation, the scales of the robot will deform and pop out from the body, grab the ground and move forward by constant inflation and deflation.
Different cuts on the plastic sheet can result in different crawling styles. After testing, the trapezoidal plastic sheet design allows the skin to stretch more and make the robot travel farther.
Harvard's research team believes that this robot can be used for medical assistance. Researcher Katia Bertoldi said, "The kirigami sensing structure we use in this robot opens the way for the design of new software robots." He also stressed, "One day, these software robots that can adapt to any terrain can navigate through difficult environments. Conduct exploration, inspection, monitoring and search and rescue missions, or perform complex laparoscopic medical procedures."
