Biologists at Virginia Tech have found that proteins that regulate the body's sleep cycle or circadian rhythm also protect the body from sporadic forms of cancer.

Finkielstein, associate professor of biological sciences, said: The protein is human period 2, environmental factors include interruption of sleep cycle, impaired function of human period 2 protein. The findings were published in the journal Molecular Biology. Specifically, the researchers found that the human period 2 protein normally interacts directly with tumor suppressor proteins to control cancer cell division. However, when the human period 2 protein does not work due to mutation or a change in some way, it cannot perform its function of preventing cancer cell division.

The researchers used various human and animal tumor cells to study the relationship between human period 2 protein and cancer, and found that inhibition of human period 2 protein gene led to abnormal circadian rhythm and tumor cell malignant transformation. Researchers are currently using patients to conduct research to determine who is at risk of developing cancer after the human period 2 protein and the genes that produce it. These findings may help develop new, more effective prevention strategies to prevent high-risk groups from developing cancer in women who work night shifts.

Finkielstein said: These findings underscore the complexity of day and night control networks and highlight their physiological implications for human health and the development of new therapeutic interventions. Over the past two decades, we have learned about the inner workings of the circadian clock, which controls our sleep-wake cycle and a host of other daily body rhythms. The Finkielstein laboratory found that a molecular gear of the circadian clock interacts directly with a protein that inhibits tumor formation, p53, a finding that may explain how circadian clock disruption can lead to cancer.

Finkielstein has long studied the link between circadian rhythms and the development of cancers such as breast cancer (especially the incidence of breast cancer among nurses and flight attendants at night shifts).
