Russia and China have broad prospects for cooperation in nuclear medicine, using nuclear reactors to deal with cancer

In 2016, the world's first trial to use nuclear reactor energy to eliminate cancer was successfully conducted in Russia. The trial of cancer treatment with a neutron source accelerator was successfully completed in Siberia, Russia, in early March. According to scientists, this method can even be used to treat tumors that are otherwise ineffective, such as a common form of glioblastoma in brain tumors. Patients with this disease have survived on average for more than a year.

Nuclear medicine is a method of treating and diagnosing various diseases with radioactive agents, and it is developing rapidly in China and Russia. The Russian National Atomic Energy Corporation provides Chinese partners with the most demanding isotope products in nuclear medicine, namely molybdenum-99 required for cancer diagnosis. At present, more than 80% of the diagnostic procedures in the world are carried out by means of the short-lived daughter isotope 锝-99m of molybdenum-99. The medical centers of the scientific research companies of the Russian National Atomic Energy Corporation produce and supply cesium generators.

Unique diagnostic method

Alexandr Uvarov, an expert on nuclear materials in Russia, said: “The use of isotopes for medical diagnosis of patients is painless, safe, and very effective. The weak radio waves from the body provide information about the various organs in the body. The exact information about its pathology, access to such information by other methods requires costly research or surgical intervention, or it is impossible."

Isotope diagnosis is unique in that radio waves come from the body rather than in vitro, just like using X-rays, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. This ensures that the organs that need to be diagnosed are being studied at a higher level. The acquired image not only reflects the pathological abnormalities in the above cases, but also displays its biological processes.
