Dr. Jennifer and his colleagues from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore have evaluated the presence of retinal vasculature in 12,317 people between the ages of 50 and 73 in association with cognitive decline over the past 20 years, with 11692 without retina. Signs of disease or retinal vascular injury, 365 people have mild retinopathy, and 256 have moderate to severe injuries.
The research team used retinal images to capture retinal images from 1993 to 1995, and conducted neuropsychological tests at 1990-1992, 1996-1998, and 2011-2013, and gave comprehensive cognitive scores.
In a controlled multivariate adjustment analysis, the researchers found that loss of vascular integrity (the retina and its components) was associated with cognitive decline over a 20-year period. The researchers found that samples with moderate to severe retinopathy scored the fastest in memory and thinking tests compared to people with normal retina. For people with moderate to severe impairment, their scores decreased by 1.22 standard deviations over 20 years, while those with normal eyes decreased by only 0.91. After the researchers corrected some of the people who did not participate in the test, the difference between the two groups was equivalent to 0.57 standard deviations. There are similar estimates of differences in samples with and without diabetes and in white and black samples.
The team believes that these findings support optical coherence tomography angiography, which may provide a relevant microvascular replacement index for cognitive decline in the elderly, and if the experimental results are further confirmed, differences in retinal integrity may be assessed for assessment of brain vascular injury. Cognitive decline provides the basis.
The research team finally said that one of the shortcomings of this study was that only one photo of the fundus was taken when taking pictures.
