Colon cancer is an important type of cancer that causes cancer death and is also a type of cancer that is often resistant to treatment. There are many reasons for the resistance of colon cancer, and the presence of cancer stem cells is an important factor in the recurrence of cancer. Traditional treatment methods are usually not particularly effective.

Recently, scientists from the EPFL have recently discovered an important signaling pathway or can be used to combat colon cancer recurrence. Reactivation of a shut down gene in cancer stem cells by treatment with vitamin A compounds can help clear cancer stem cells and prevent recurrence and metastasis.

The study focused on a protein called HOXA5, which began to appear in the early stages of development and works together to ensure that each tissue is properly formed and that the torso and limbs are properly aligned. In adults, proteins like HOXA5 regulate the body's stem cells to maintain the characteristics and functions of different tissues. The researchers found that in the intestine, HOXA5 plays an important role in limiting the number of stem cells.

The study found that cancer stem cells in the colon blocked the expression of HOXA5 through a signaling pathway. By blocking the expression of HOXA5, cancer stem cells can spread without restriction, causing recurrence and metastasis.

The researchers found that vitamin A compounds reversed the blockade of HOXA5 gene expression and reactivated HOXA5. In a mouse model of colon cancer, treatment with vitamin A compounds can block cancer progression, normalize tissue, and eliminate cancer stem cells and prevent metastasis of cancer cells. The researchers also found similar effects in patient samples.

This latest study suggests that this treatment can be used to treat patients with HOXA5 based on their expression, and this method can not only effectively treat colon cancer, but also be used as a preventive measure for high-risk patients.

The relevant research results were published in the international academic journal cancer cell.
