Massachusetts General Hospital develops new smartphone connectivity devices to quickly diagnose cancer

Release date: 2015-09-22

Two researchers at the Massachusetts General Hospital have developed a device that requires only a smartphone to get the results of a cancer diagnosis study in an hour without the need for an invasive biopsy.

The D3 or Digital Spectroscopic Diagnostic System is a small device that can be connected to a smartphone camera and can be converted into a powerful microscope for analyzing samples from blood, fine needle biopsy, Pap smear or a few cells. The system injects specific antibodies that are able to "glow" cancer cells.

Dr. Ralph Weissleder, the team leader, said that smartphones capture photos of luminescent antibodies. At the same time, researchers use these markers to diagnose cancer patients. He also said that the technology can also be used for the diagnosis of other diseases, because this process is the same as the work of pathologists.

The device has been tested in a cohort for comparison with the results of a case expert. One of the tasks is to distinguish whether the cervical specimen is high-risk, low-risk or benign. Another task is to distinguish between four benign and malignant tumors.

The system was originally designed to help people in remote parts of Africa without too many medical facilities to diagnose the disease. But the team's co-leader, Hakho Lee, believes that it can also be used at home, helping patients to quickly get results in the hospital and even in the future to develop home-testing methods.

The next step is a large-scale clinical trial funded by NIH in the United States.
