Significant breakthrough in fingerprint identification technology: can confirm the time left

Release date: 2014-06-10

According to Singapore's "Lianhe Zaobao" reported on the 9th, the fingerprint identification technology made a major breakthrough, the Dutch scientists found that by analyzing the proportion of chemical substances contained in the fingerprint, it can be inferred how long the fingerprint exists.

According to the report, since each person's fingerprints are different, fingerprints are the most common method for identifying criminals, but current identification techniques cannot determine when fingerprints are left.

The fingerprinting researcher Di Puyi of the Dutch Forensic Society pointed out that the fingerprint of the neighbor left by the burglary scene pointed out that this fingerprint was left behind by the neighbors or the night of the incident, which is crucial for the investigation.

He said: "If you can confirm when the fingerprint is left, you can determine when the suspect has arrived at the scene and what fingerprints are relevant to the case."

Fingerprints are mainly composed of sweat, oil, cholesterol, amino acids, and proteins. Dipuy pointed out that some of these substances will gradually disappear over time, so as long as the proportion of chemicals in the fingerprint is identified, it can be estimated how long the fingerprint has existed.

In addition, the identification process must also take into account the temperature at which the fingerprint is located, as temperature can affect the rate of degradation of fingerprint chemicals. Forensic experts said that with this new technology, fingerprints left in the past one or two to 15 days can be accurately identified.

Dipuy pointed out that scientists have tried to analyze the chemical substances in the fingerprints in the past, but at that time they focused on individual quantities rather than the overall proportion, so the failure ended. He said that the next step is to apply the new technology to the real crime scene to establish a relevant database. It is hoped that the technology will be accepted by the court as evidence in court within one year.
