Release date: 2015-09-22

Recently, at the annual meeting of the European Association for Diabetes Research, Dr. Tomohoh Yamada from the University of Tokyo, Japan, introduced a new study that found that sleeping during the day or taking a long nap during the day was associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
Sleep is a very important activity in a healthy life of human beings, just as important as a healthy diet and proper physical activity. At present, the phenomenon of excessive sleep during the day is common in the world, and the nap during the day is usually short, usually from a few minutes to several hours. And some people with sleep disorders will have too much sleep during the day.
In this latest study, researchers used meta-analysis to study the relationship between daytime sleep or naps and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. They searched for articles and research published before November 2014 with the keywords of daytime sleep, naps and diabetes. Of the 683 studies found, 10 were recognized high quality studies, including 261,365. A study of Asian and Western subjects.
After research, it was found that excessive daytime sleep caused an increase in the risk of type 2 diabetes by about 56%, and a nap time of more than 60 minutes, which increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by about 46%. In contrast, a short nap (no more than 60 minutes a day) does not increase the risk of diabetes.
The authors conclude that "too much sleep during the day or a long nap is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, and a short nap does not increase this risk. A nap less than 30 minutes will enter. Before the end of deep short-wave sleep, once you enter deep short-wave sleep, it will start a normal sleep cycle, leading to the appearance of sleep inertia, so people will feel more sleepy than before going to sleep. The current mechanism for short-term naps can reduce the risk of diabetes is still not Clear, but our research has partially demonstrated that different sleep durations have different effects on the risk of disease."
